Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-residue peptide first isolated from thymus tissue in the 1970s. It corresponds to the N-terminal portion of thymosin beta-4, from which it is cleaved in vivo. The peptide carries an acetyl group at its N-terminus, a modification that affects its charge and stability. Synthetic material produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis is chemically identical to the natural fragment and is the form used in research and clinical studies.
Laboratory work indicates that the peptide acts on cells of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. Reported effects include signalling through Toll-like receptors on dendritic cells, enhanced T-cell maturation, and increased natural killer cell activity. These actions are described largely from cell-culture and animal experiments, and the precise receptor-level events remain incompletely defined. Studies in humans have generally measured immune markers rather than a single defined molecular target. The resulting picture remains partly descriptive.
Clinical research has examined the peptide in chronic hepatitis B and C, as a vaccine adjuvant, and in sepsis and oncology settings. Results across trials have been mixed, and several studies were small or conducted under differing protocols. Regulatory status varies by country, and the compound is not approved in every jurisdiction where it is studied. Evidence for any single indication should be read with attention to sample size and endpoint choice.
Storage recommendations center on low temperature, dryness, and protection from repeated freezing and thawing. The intact powder is commonly held at 20 degrees below zero Celsius or colder, while a working solution is divided into single-use aliquots to limit freeze-thaw cycles. Buffered saline or phosphate-buffered saline at neutral pH is frequently used as a diluent. Light sensitivity is not well documented, yet amber vials or foil wrapping are common practice for long-term storage of peptide stocks.
Identity and purity are assessed with a small set of standard peptide methods. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the main peak from truncated or oxidized species, and its area percentage is the usual purity measure. Mass spectrometry confirms the observed molecular mass against the expected value, while amino acid analysis or peptide mapping checks composition and sequence. Specifications for research-grade material are often stated as 95 percent or higher, though the exact limit depends on the supplier and the intended use.
Laboratory supplies of the peptide usually arrive as a lyophilized powder in sealed vials. The powder is hygroscopic, so a vial should be allowed to reach room temperature before it is opened to prevent condensation on the contents. Weighing and transfer are best performed in a low-humidity environment with clean tools. Once dissolved, the solution should be mixed gently rather than vortexed, because foaming and shear can reduce recovery of the peptide.

Thymosin beta-4 is a separate 43-residue peptide that binds actin and participates in cell migration; it shares no sequence similarity with thymosin alpha-1 despite the common family name. Other preparative materials, such as thymosin fraction 5 and thymopoietin, contain distinct mixtures or peptides. The shared thymosin label reflects the tissue of origin used in early purification, not a common structural core. Treating these molecules as interchangeable is a frequent source of confusion in laboratory reports and in popular summaries alike.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acid residues that corresponds to a naturally occurring fragment first isolated from thymus tissue. Its chain is acetylated at the amino terminus, a modification that shields the peptide from rapid cleavage by aminopeptidases. The molecule carries a net negative charge at physiological pH and dissolves freely in water. Researchers classify it as an immune-modulating agent rather than a classical hormone, because it acts on several cell types of both the innate and the adaptive immune system.
The peptide was identified during work in the 1970s on thymosin fraction 5, a partially purified extract of calf thymus. Investigators separated that mixture and characterized individual components, one of which they named thymosin alpha-1. The same compound later received the international nonproprietary name thymalfasin. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than by extraction, so synthetic and natural forms share an identical sequence. Naming conventions vary across the literature, and readers should distinguish the alpha-1 peptide from other thymosins that have unrelated sequences and functions.
The lyophilized peptide is generally stable for extended periods when kept cold and dry. Once dissolved, aqueous solutions are less stable; hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation can degrade the material. Storage at -20 °C or lower slows these processes. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are best avoided because they can promote aggregation. The exact shelf life depends on formulation, pH, and concentration, so stability studies are typically performed for each specific product.
Quality control for thymosin alpha-1 focuses on identity, purity, and potency. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry and amino acid analysis, while purity is assessed by chromatography with limits on related substances and residual solvents. Potency assays may use cell-based immune readouts, but these are not standardized across laboratories. Regulatory status differs by jurisdiction; no product is approved in the United States for clinical use, whereas some other countries register injectable forms for specific indications.
== Doubts about existence == In October 2011 the Journal of Strategic Studies, a leading journal in that field, published an article by Thomas Rid, "Cyber War Will Not Take Place" which argued that all politically motivated cyber attacks are merely sophisticated versions of sabotage, espionage, or subversion – and that it is unlikely that cyber war will occur in the future.
Hemoglobin S/ beta thalassemia: (see above). Hemoglobin S/ hemoglobin C (Hemoglobin SC disease) occurs when an individual inherits one gene for hemoglobin S (sickle cell) and one gene for hemoglobin C, The symptoms are very similar to sickle cell disease.
More recent publications have defined the usually recommended doses as 50 mg DMT and 100 mg harmaline orally. Besides DMT with harmaline, the properties and effects of oral DMT in combination with harmine have also been studied by Jonathan Ott. He found that the threshold dose was 20 or 30 mg DMT and 120 mg harmine orally. Shulgin also reported in TiHKAL that 35 to 40 mg DMT and 140 to 190 mg harmine were unmistakably active, whereas smaller doses of 30 mg DMT and 120 to 140 mg harmine orally were inactive. In notable contrast to harmaline, harmine does not have its own psychoactive effects when used at doses of up to at least 300 mg orally. In pharmahuasca, the harmala alkaloid is usually taken first and then DMT is taken 15 to 20 minutes later, although a shorter or longer interval may also be employed. The onset of oral DMT with an MAOI is within 1 hour and its duration is 4 to 6 hours.

Vitamin C can be produced from glucose by two main routes. The no longer used Reichstein process, developed in the 1930s, used a single fermentation followed by a purely chemical route. The modern two-step fermentation process, originally developed in China in the 1960s, uses additional fermentation to replace part of the later chemical stages. The Reichstein process and the modern two-step fermentation processes both use glucose as the starting material, convert that to sorbitol, and then to sorbose using fermentation. The two-step fermentation process then converts sorbose to 2-keto-l-gulonic acid (KGA) through another fermentation step, avoiding an extra intermediate. Both processes yield approximately 60% vitamin C from the glucose starting point. Researchers are exploring means for one-step fermentation. China produces about 70% of the global vitamin C market. The rest is split among European Union, India and North America. The global market was expected to exceed 141 thousand metric tons in 2024. Cost per metric ton (1000 kg) in US dollars was $2,220 in Shanghai, $2,850 in Hamburg and $3,490 in the US.
=== Legal status === In the United States, benzodiazepines are Schedule IV drugs under the Federal Controlled Substances Act, even when not on the market (for example, flunitrazepam), with the exception of flualprazolam, etizolam, clonazolam, flubromazolam, and diclazepam which are placed in Schedule I. In Canada, possession of benzodiazepines is legal for personal use. All benzodiazepines are categorized as Schedule IV substances under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. In the United Kingdom, benzodiazepines are Class C controlled drugs, carrying the maximum penalty of 7 years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both for possession and a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both for supplying benzodiazepines to others. In the Netherlands, since October 1993, benzodiazepines, including formulations containing less than 20 mg of temazepam, are all placed on List 2 of the Opium Law. A prescription is needed for possession of all benzodiazepines. Temazepam formulations containing 20 mg or greater of the drug are placed on List 1, thus requiring doctors to write prescriptions in the List 1 format. In East Asia and Southeast Asia, temazepam and nimetazepam are often heavily controlled and restricted. In certain countries, triazolam, flunitrazepam, flutoprazepam and midazolam are also restricted or controlled to certain degrees. In Hong Kong, all benzodiazepines are regulated under Schedule 1 of Hong Kong's Chapter 134 Dangerous Drugs Ordinance. Previously only brotizolam, flunitrazepam and triazolam were classed as dangerous drugs.
The Duterte administration has vowed to pursue what it describes as an "independent foreign policy" that would reject any meddling by foreign governments, reiterating Article II, Section 7 of the 1987 Constitution which states: "The State shall pursue an independent foreign policy. In its relations with other states the paramount consideration shall be national sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interest, and the right to self-determination." At a September 2016 press conference, Duterte stated: "We will observe and must insist on the time-honored principle of sovereignty, sovereign equality, non-interference and the commitment of peaceful settlements of dispute that will serve our people and protect the interests of our country." Duterte made his first international trips as president to Vientiane, Laos and Jakarta, Indonesia on September 5–9, 2016. Duterte pursued improved relations with China and Russia, and lessened the country's dependence on its traditional ally – the United States. He has adopted a cautious, pragmatic, and conciliatory stance towards China compared to his predecessor, and has set aside the previous administration's confrontational policy of asserting the Philippines' claims over the South China Sea and its islands. Militant groups decry the ties between President Duterte and China over the Chinese occupation of contested waters and the reported harassment of the fishermen amidst the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
==== Effects on mental health ==== Based on a nationally representative sample of 20,847 US adults, a 2026 survey study in JAMA Network Open found that daily generative AI use was significantly associated with greater depressive symptoms, with the odds of at least moderate depression roughly 30% higher among daily users than among non-users. The association was strongest for personal use and among those aged 25 to 64; the cross-sectional design did not allow for causal conclusions. Separately, a 2025 nationally representative survey of US adolescents and young adults (aged 12 to 21) found that roughly 13% had used generative AI for emotional support, with more than 90% of them reporting the advice as helpful. Controlled trials have shown some therapeutic potential. The first randomized controlled trial of a fully generative AI therapy chatbot, published in NEJM AI in 2025, found significant reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and eating disorders over four weeks compared to a waitlist control, with participants rating the therapeutic alliance as comparable to that of human therapists. These findings are consistent with a 2025 meta-analysis of 31 RCTs (n=29,637) that found small-to-moderate effects of AI chatbots in reducing depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms among young adults.
=== Neuroprotective effects === Citicoline may have neuroprotective effects due to its preservation of cardiolipin and sphingomyelin, preservation of arachidonic acid content of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine, partial restoration of phosphatidylcholine levels, and stimulation of glutathione synthesis and glutathione reductase activity. Citicoline's effects may also be explained by the reduction of phospholipase A2 activity. Citicoline increases phosphatidylcholine synthesis. The mechanism for this may be:

=== Antimicrobial Platelets === Platelet-mimicking particles engineered with antimicrobial properties offer a novel approach to combating infections by targeting pathogens at injury sites, enhancing immune responses, and delivering antimicrobial agents directly to affected areas. While platelets are often recognized for their hemostatic role, more recent research focuses on their ability to fight infections by releasing antimicrobial molecules and through interactions with immune cells. Building on these properties, synthetic antimicrobial platelets can be an attractive targeted therapy for preventing and treating infections, particularly in trauma, surgery, and immunocompromised patients. An approach to developing antimicrobial platelet-like particles (PLPs) involves the integration of nanosilver— a material known for its potent antimicrobial activity. Recent findings have reported that nanosilver composite PNIPAM microgels incorporated into PLPs (Ag-PLPs) effectively inhibited bacterial growth while maintaining key platelet functions such as deformability and clot retraction.4 This balance is needed in order for antimicrobial synthetic platelets to induce wound healing as well as hemostasis, while keeping infection risk at minimum. Ag-PLPs, in a wound experimental model, not only increased clot retraction but also performance of healing, suggesting its regard as a "two-in-one therapy" for high-risk infection trauma patients.
== Contraindications == Lurasidone is contraindicated in individuals who are taking strong inhibitors of the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (ketoconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir, levodropropizine, etc.) or inducers (carbamazepine, St. John's wort, phenytoin, rifampicin etc.). The use of lurasidone in pregnant women has not been studied and is not recommended; in animal studies, no risks have been found. Excretion in breast milk is also unknown; lurasidone is not recommended for breastfeeding women. The enzyme CYP3A4 is involved in the digestion of drugs. Inhibitors such as grapefruit juice block its function, resulting in too much drug in the body.
A PAM250 is a commonly used scoring matrix for sequence comparison. Only the lower half of the matrix needs to be computed, since by their construction, PAM matrices are required to be symmetric. Each of the 20 amino acid are shown down the top and side of the matrix, with 3 additional ambiguous amino acids. The amino acids are most commonly shown listed alphabetically, or listed in groups. These groups are the characteristics shared among the amino acids.
Sephadex is a cross-linked dextran gel used for gel filtration. It was launched by Pharmacia in 1959, after development work by Jerker Porath and Per Flodin. The name is derived from separation Pharmacia dextran. It is normally manufactured in a bead form and most commonly used for gel filtration columns. By varying the degree of cross-linking, the fractionation properties of the gel can be altered. These highly specialized gel filtration and chromatographic media are composed of macroscopic beads synthetically derived from the polysaccharide dextran. The organic chains are cross-linked to give a three-dimensional network having functional ionic groups attached by ether linkages to glucose units of the polysaccharide chains. Available forms include anion and cation exchangers, as well as gel filtration resins, with varying degrees of porosity; bead sizes fall in discrete ranges between 20 and 300 μm. Sephadex is also used for ion-exchange chromatography. Sephadex is crosslinked with epichlorohydrin.

It corresponds to the first 28 amino acids of thymosin beta-4, a larger protein found in many tissues. The fragment is acetylated at its N-terminus and is produced synthetically for research and pharmaceutical use. Synthetic and natural forms share the same sequence.
It is usually described as an immunomodulatory peptide rather than a classical hormone. It does not travel to a single distant organ in the manner of an endocrine hormone. Classification varies across sources, and some texts group it with thymic peptides generally.
The broad outline involves immune cell activation, but the specific molecular steps remain under investigation. Different studies report effects on dendritic cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. No single receptor has been confirmed as the sole mediator.
Aliquots are typically frozen well below zero Celsius and thawed only once, since repeated cycles promote aggregation and loss. Dilution into a neutral buffer limits degradation during short working periods, and prolonged storage at room temperature is avoided.
