thymalfasin raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.
This page was last updated on 2025-11-14 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
The compound has been investigated as an adjunct in chronic viral hepatitis and as a vaccine adjuvant, with results that vary by study design and population. Regulators in some countries have approved a synthetic form for specific indications, while other agencies have not. Whether the peptide produces consistent clinical benefit across diverse patient groups is still an open question, and many trials have been small. Its status is therefore best described as investigational in many contexts and established only narrowly.
The name itself causes confusion, because several unrelated thymic peptides share the thymosin label. Thymosin beta-4, for example, is a different molecule with different functions. Naming conventions in the literature also mix descriptive research terms with assigned nonproprietary names, so a reader should confirm which entity a given paper addresses. Clarifying that point is usually the first step in interpreting any claim about this peptide.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic 28-amino-acid peptide whose sequence was first identified in extracts of bovine thymus tissue during the 1970s. The chain carries an acetyl group on its N-terminal serine. Its acidic residue content is high, which produces strong water solubility and an isoelectric point well below neutrality. Material supplied for laboratory and clinical use is manufactured by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than purified from animal tissue. Different salt forms, such as the acetate, alter the counter-ion content without changing the peptide backbone.
Whether the free 28-residue peptide circulates in human tissue remains debated. The best-documented human source is prothymosin alpha, a larger acidic protein that carries the sequence at its N-terminus. Reports of measurable peptide levels in serum and lymphoid tissue exist, yet some of that signal may come from cross-reacting fragments or from the parent protein. Most reviews therefore treat prothymosin alpha as the established human molecule and describe independent circulation of the small peptide as an unresolved question.

As of 2017, Oxandrolone was one of the few AASs that remained available for medical use in the United States. In June 2023, the FDA formally withdrew approval for oxandrolone for all indications, stating that possible adverse effects of the drug were sufficiently serious to warrant removal from the US market. The FDA decision was for reasons of safety or effectiveness, following a 2019 letter from Gemini, a drug manufacturer, stating that the product was no longer being marketed. As of August 2023, the AASs that remained available for medical use in the US were testosterone, testosterone cypionate, testosterone enanthate, testosterone undecanoate, methyltestosterone, fluoxymesterone, and oxymetholone.
=== Chemical disinfection with halogens === Chemical disinfection with halogens, chiefly chlorine and iodine, results from oxidation of essential cellular structures and enzymes. The primary factors that determine the rate and proportion of microorganisms killed are the residual or available halogen concentration and the exposure time. Secondary factors are pathogen species, water temperature, pH, and organic contaminants. In field-water disinfection, use of concentrations of 1–16 mg/L for 10–60 min is generally effective. Of note, Cryptosporidium oocysts, likely Cyclospora species, Ascaris eggs are extremely resistant to halogens and field inactivation may not be practical with bleach and iodine.
The Shroud has undergone several restorations and several steps have been taken to preserve it to avoid further damage and contamination. It is kept under laminated bulletproof glass in an airtight case. The temperature- and humidity-controlled case is filled with argon (99.5%) and oxygen (0.5%) to prevent chemical changes. The shroud itself is kept on an aluminium support sliding on runners and stored flat within the case. During a 2002 restoration by the Commission for the Conservation of the Shroud, thirty triangular patches and a Holland cloth backing that had been added by nuns in 1534 were removed. This restoration has been criticized as causing damage to the Shroud.

In adults, wasting (or cachexia) caused by AIDS. Turner syndrome epitomizes the response of non-deficient shortness. At doses 20% higher than those used in GH deficiency, growth accelerates. With several years of treatment the median gain in adult height is about 5-8 cm on this dose. The gains appear to be dose-dependent. It has been used successfully in toddlers with Turner syndrome, as well as in older girls. Short-stature homeobox gene deficiency Chronic kidney failure results in many problems, including growth failure. GH treatment for several years both before and after transplantation may prevent further deceleration of growth and may narrow the height deficit, though even with treatment net adult height loss may be about 10 cm Prader–Willi syndrome, a generally non-hereditary genetic condition, is a case where GH is prescribed for benefits in addition to height. GH is one of the treatment options an experienced endocrinologist may use when treating a child with PWS. GH can help children with PWS in height, weight, body mass, strength, and agility. . Reports have indicated increase of growth rate (especially in the first year of treatment) and a variety of other positive effects, including improved body composition (higher muscle mass, lower fat mass); improved weight management; increased energy and physical activity; improved strength, agility, and endurance; and improved respiratory function. The Prader–Willi Syndrome Association (US) recommends that a sleep study be conducted before initiating GH treatment in a child with PWS.
In March 1907 several of Eddy's relatives filed an unsuccessful lawsuit, the "Next Friends suit," against members of Eddy's household, alleging that she was unable to manage her own affairs. Calvin Frye, her long-time personal assistant, was a particular target of the allegations. The New York World's front-page story in October 1906, headline "Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy Dying; Footman and Dummy Control Her," said that Eddy was housebound and dying of cancer, that her staff had taken control of her fortune, and that another woman was impersonating her in public. The newspaper persuaded Eddy's family (or "next friends") to file a lawsuit. Several joined the action, including Eddy's biological son, George Glover, and adoptive son, Ebenezer J. Foster Eddy. Eddy was interviewed in her home in August 1907 by the judge and two psychiatrists, who concluded that she was mentally competent. In response to the McClure's and New York World stories, Eddy asked the church in July 1908 to found the Christian Science Monitor as a platform for responsible journalism. It appeared in November that year, with the motto "To injure no man, but to bless all mankind," and went on to win seven Pulitzer Prizes between 1950 and 2002. Eddy died two years later, on the evening of Saturday, December 3, 1910, aged 89. The Mother Church announced at the end of the Sunday morning service that Eddy had "passed from our sight." It said that "the time will come when there will be no more death," but that Christian Scientists "do not look for [Mrs.
===== Juscelino Filho ===== After having strongly criticized the secret budget, a controversial legislative practice initiated during the Jair Bolsonaro government that consists of allocating funds from the public budget to projects defined by parliamentarians with little transparency, Lula appointed Juscelino Filho, affiliated with União Brasil, to the Ministry of Communications. From the end of January onward, a series of allegations fell upon the minister. It was found that Juscelino had used 5 million reais from the Secret Budget for his own benefit, carrying out an asphalt paving project in front of his farm that benefits at least eight people connected to him in Vitorino Freire, a municipality of Maranhão previously governed by his father and currently governed by his sister, where about one-third of the population lives on dirt roads. Another accusation against Juscelino is related to the falsification of information regarding the payment of 385 thousand reais in air taxi services during the 2022 electoral campaign. The information was published by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. Juscelino informed the Superior Electoral Court that he made 23 trips through the company Rotorfly Taxi Aéreo from August to September 2022 during the campaign. In the accounting of expenses, it is stated that three alleged campaign workers carried out the trips. In addition, Juscelino is suspected of having favored the contractor Engefort in a public works project of the Codevasf.
== Chemistry == Mesocarb, also known as 3-(β-phenylisopropyl)-N-phenylcarbamoylsydnonimine, is a substituted phenethylamine and amphetamine and a mesoionic sydnone imine. It has the amphetamine backbone present, except that the RN has a complicated imine side chain present. Whereas mesocarb (MLR-1017) is a racemic mixture, the enantiopure levorotatory or (R)-enantiomer is known as armesocarb (MLR-1019). Armesocarb is described as the active enantiomer of mesocarb, whereas the (S)- or D-enantiomer is said to be virtually inactive. It is structurally related to feprosidnine (Sydnophen; 3-(α-methylphenylethyl)sydnone imine).

==== Definition ==== A broader definition of behavior, applicable to plants and other organisms, is similar to the concept of phenotypic plasticity. It describes behavior as a response to an event or environment change during the course of the lifetime of an individual, differing from other physiological or biochemical changes that occur more rapidly, and excluding changes that are a result of development (ontogeny). Behaviour can be regarded as any action of an organism that changes its relationship to its environment. Behavior provides outputs from the organism to the environment.
=== Controlling neuron activity states === The Na+-K+ pump has been shown to control and set the intrinsic activity mode of cerebellar Purkinje neurons, accessory olfactory bulb mitral cells and probably other neuron types. This suggests that the pump might not simply be a homeostatic, "housekeeping" molecule for ionic gradients, but could be a computation element in the cerebellum and the brain. Indeed, a mutation in the Na+-K+ pump causes rapid onset dystonia-parkinsonism, which has symptoms to indicate that it is a pathology of cerebellar computation. Furthermore, an ouabain block of Na+-K+ pumps in the cerebellum of a live mouse results in it displaying ataxia and dystonia. Alcohol inhibits sodium–potassium pumps in the cerebellum and this is likely how it corrupts cerebellar computation and body coordination. The distribution of the Na+-K+ pump on myelinated axons in the human brain has been demonstrated to be along the internodal axolemma, and not within the nodal axolemma as previously thought. The Na+-K+ pump disfunction has been tied to various diseases, including epilepsy and brain malformations.
A maltoside is a glycoside with maltose as the glycone (sugar) functional group. Among the most common are alkyl maltosides, which contain hydrophobic alkyl chains as the aglycone. Given their amphiphilic properties, these comprise a class of detergents, where variation in the alkyl chain confers a range of detergent properties including CMC and solubility. Maltosides are most often used for the solubilization and purification of membrane proteins.
== Comparative information == All ACE inhibitors have similar antihypertensive efficacy when equivalent doses are administered. The main differences lie with captopril, the first ACE inhibitor. Captopril has a shorter duration of action and an increased incidence of adverse effects. It is also capable of passing through the blood–brain barrier. In a large clinical study, one of the agents in the ACE inhibitor class, ramipril (Altace), demonstrated an ability to reduce the mortality rates of patients with a myocardial infarction and to slow the subsequent development of heart failure. This finding was made after it was discovered that regular use of ramipril reduced mortality rates even in test subjects who did not have hypertension. Some believe ramipril's additional benefits may be shared by some or all drugs in the ACE-inhibitor class. However, ramipril currently remains the only ACE inhibitor for which such effects are actually evidence-based. A meta-analysis confirmed that ACE inhibitors are effective and certainly the first-line choice in hypertension treatment. This meta-analysis was based on 20 trials and a cohort of 158,998 patients, of whom 91% were hypertensive. ACE inhibitors were used as the active treatment in seven trials (n=76,615) and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) in 13 trials (n=82,383). ACE inhibitors were associated with a statistically significant 10% mortality reduction: (HR 0.90; 95% CI, 0.84–0.97; P=0.004). In contrast, no significant mortality reduction was observed with ARB treatment (HR 0.99; 95% CI, 0.94–1.04; P=0.683).
He further dismissed India's firm stance on pursuing terrorists as a “new abnormal,” stating it did not serve the interests of either country. Bilawal Zardari faced strong criticism from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) following his remarks suggesting that Pakistan could extradite “individuals of concern” to India as a confidence-building measure. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned the statement as undermining national security and appeasing a "hostile neighbour", calling him an “immature political child” and accusing him of lacking understanding of regional geopolitics. Akram argued that such proposals compromised Pakistan’s sovereignty and contradicted the legacy of the Pakistan Peoples Party, particularly on the Kashmir issue. He further criticized Bilawal Zardari’s political credibility and called for a leadership change within the party. Talha Saeed, son of Hafiz Saeed, condemned Bilawal Zardari remarks on the possible extradition of Pakistani citizens to India, calling them contrary to state policy and national interest, and defended his father by asserting that none of his actions were against Pakistan.

It is usually classified as an immunomodulatory peptide rather than a classical hormone. It derives from the larger protein prothymosin alpha and acts mainly on immune cells. The thymosin label covers a group of distinct peptides, so the naming can be misleading.
The two share a family name but have different sequences, sizes, and functions. Thymosin beta-4 is a 43-residue peptide associated with actin binding and cell migration. Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-residue peptide linked mainly to immune signaling.
Thymalfasin is the assigned international nonproprietary name for the synthetic 28-residue peptide. Thymosin alpha-1 is the descriptive research name for the same molecule. Which term appears depends on the context and the regulatory document.
It is usually described as an immunomodulatory peptide rather than a classic circulating hormone. No endocrine gland is known to release it as a primary secretory product, and its measured presence in blood is not firmly established.
